Delivered by VIOTAS and our strategic partners, the service supports stronger site resilience, improved business continuity, and greater protection from energy disruption. It also gives businesses the opportunity to participate in demand response programmes, unlocking new value while supporting Ireland’s transition to a more flexible, renewable-powered grid.
With VIO Flex GRID, businesses can modernise critical energy infrastructure, strengthen sustainability credentials, and take practical action towards long-term energy resilience.
A simple way to improve backup power and support the grid
Fully funded backup generation with VIOTAS supports large energy users in Ireland that want to upgrade or install flexible assets such as modern, ultra low-emission backup generation or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
This equipment can help your business stay more secure during grid issues. It can also help the electricity system by reducing pressure on the grid at important times. By taking part, your business can improve resilience, support more renewable energy, and potentially earn income from helping the grid.
We handle the process from start to finish, making participation easy, low-effort, and disruption-free.
VIOTAS looks at your energy use, backup power needs and existing equipment. We then help you understand what option works best for your business.
VIOTAS works with strategic partners to manage the design, installation, and connection of sustainably fueled backup generators, or to support the upgrade of existing generators to the same standard.
Once connected, your equipment helps strengthen site resilience by providing reliable backup generation when your business needs it most, while also supporting the electricity grid when needed.

In this section, we will dive into the key aspects of VIO Flex GRID.
If you need further assistance or can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
VIO Flex GRID uses HVO, which stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. In simple terms, HVO is a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel. It is made from renewable and waste-based materials such as used cooking oils and fats. It can be used in generator systems while helping to reduce the carbon impact compared with standard diesel. This means your site can strengthen its backup power capability while using a more sustainable fuel option.
HVO is considered more sustainable because it is produced from renewable sources rather than crude oil. It can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, produces cleaner combustion, and supports lower-carbon backup generation. For businesses, this means you can improve site resilience and support business continuity while reducing the environmental impact of backup power.
SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction. It is an emissions control technology used to reduce nitrogen oxides, also known as NOx, from generator exhaust gases. In simple terms, SCR treats the exhaust before it leaves the system. A small amount of reagent, commonly AdBlue or urea solution, is injected into the exhaust stream. This reacts with NOx in the presence of a catalyst and converts it into nitrogen and water vapour, which are naturally occurring and far less harmful. For customers, this means the generator can support site resilience and business continuity while helping to reduce harmful emissions.
With VIO Flex GRID, you can generate revenue for approximately 10 to 11 years. This gives your business a long-term opportunity to earn income while strengthening your backup power strategy. Instead of treating resilience as a pure cost, VIO Flex GRID helps turn standby generation into a commercial asset that supports both your operations and the wider electricity system. At the end of the term, the client will own the genset, giving the business a long-term resilience asset beyond the revenue period.
Yes. If you invest in your own backup generator, you can still take part in VIO Flex GRID. Once the generator meets the required standards and is suitable for the service, you can be paid for making it available when the grid needs support. This means your CapEx investment can deliver more than backup power alone. It can support business continuity, improve site resilience, and create a long-term revenue stream for your business which can help fund or indeed completely cover your initial CapEx spend.
In certain cases, where VIOTAS installs a fully funded generator, an annual ground rent may be payable for the duration of the agreement. Eligibility depends on the site’s characteristics, location, and operational dynamics, so each project is assessed individually.
